Social media has grown and evolved so much in the last few years, and so has consumerism. I remember the first time I joined in on social media and it was MSN Messenger. Sure it was just a chatting program, but you could have a status message, profile picture, and even a bio I believe. Then it moved to Bebo, MySpace, and then Facebook. Almost every electronic device has access to all these sites and more. The world is more connected than ever before and there's no way to go back to the way it used to be, not that that is what I desire, I'm just saying the world has been permanently changed by the internet.
The internet has also given rise to new ways of consumerism, it has basically become a monster of it's own. You cannot visit a website without seeing some time of advertisement or pop up. Even popular YouTubers are not endorsed by companies so that they will mention their products in their videos just so that they can get a little more money that they don't really need. The video we watched last week about subliminal advertisements was almost unbelievable, and it is still hard to think that maybe it was not a little staged, but if it is true then that is actually really kind of scary. It makes me wonder how many times I have fallen for such a trap in my everyday life.
