I started recording my exposure to media on a Monday. I choose Monday because I wasn't very busy that day and I thought that it would be easier to record what I noticed throughout the day. Since we couldn't record our exposure to media over the weekends, I thought Monday was as good as any to get started.
After recording my exposure to the media for a day, I noticed some interesting things. Some patterns that occurred throughout the day was that I mostly communicated over text messaging and e-mail. This seems to be the most popular and convenient form of communication that we use today. I also noticed that I communicated over text or e-mail a lot more in the afternoons and evenings. I was definitely exposed to more social media over visual media throughout the day.
There were many logos that I came upon that day but could not record them because many I was unaware of the brand or couldn't tell because it was in passing. I know that most logos were on people's clothing or backpack. Most images or pictures that I came across were hung up around campus. I know that there are fliers around campus, but did not notice them the day I was recording my exposure.
The most common media that I came in contact with was texting, calling, or Huntington University logos. This makes sense since I attend college and texting and calling is what people use to communicate. Almost anywhere you look on campus you will either see someone texting or owning something that has the Huntington University logo on it. I was also exposed to a lot of Netflix, which was just a way to relax during the day.
The types of Content I was exposing myself to was information from people. Also, Huntington University logo which could mean that Huntington must be a great college if so many people are buying items that advertise the school. The Content from the text messages and e-mails were mostly showing that people wanted to communicate with me either to ask how my day went or my mother telling me that I need to get a job. The Form of these Contents were on cell phones and people’s clothing or items. There weren't much connections between my exposure and influence besides that the most logos I saw was, in fact, the college that I attend. Also, being motivated by my mom to get a job since that's what she e-mails be about every single day.
What I learned about myself and the media surrounding me is that media is all around us. No matter where we look, there is some form of media in our everyday lives. This can have an impact on us because of the exposure that surrounds us. I noticed that I spend a lot of time texting and being on the phone every day. I'm not sure this is necessarily a bad thing because family and friendships are really important to me and I try to keep in touch with the people that I care about. So media can be a good thing, however, it can also be influential and very distracting.
