While watching the video in class about the advertisers creating an ad that looked almost exactly like the advertisement that was put around them on their car ride, it brought about many feelings towards social media for me. My first reaction towards the video was pure fascination that such little exposure in our environment can make that big of an impact on us. Soon after being fascinated, I felt completely horrified that people have that much power in social media and advertisement and how they are using that to influence us on an unconscious level. The video proved that we are influenced in ways that we aren't even aware of, and that is a lot of power over the people. It's no wonder we have people with eating disabilities and other body image issues. It's because we are exposed everywhere we go on an unconscious level of what beauty is and how we should look in society. It's truly frightening.
While reading about how Facebook as grown over the years and how big of an impact it has made all around the world, I was not surprised. It makes me think about how much of an impact that has made through out my life since I started using Facebook. Facebook is a great way to communicate with others, but the exposure of Facebook to people all around the world is crazy. Facebook uses advertisement on their site as well. It would impossible to say that we aren't impacted by that when such a large number of people use it every single day.
