Reflections on "The New Age of the Music Video"

After reading through the article entitled "I Screen, You Screen: The New Age of the Music Video" by Jon Caramanica, it immediately strikes me as funny how much times have changed even since his writing. Throughout his article, he references the speculation of whether or not Apple Computer will at some point release an iPod that has the capability to watch videos. Yet, as I am typing this, I paused for a second to check a text message on my iPhone, which is capable of watching any type of video medium there is. Also, he writes an entire portion of his article about how Myspace seems to be replacing MTV in many regards. It astonishes me how much our times are changing.

It is so interesting to me how music videos have developed over the years. Coming from humble beginnings, they have achieved a position of honor in our society. Now, when we watch music videos, we often are expecting a certain level of quality, despite the fact that that may vary from video to video. The YouTube community watches music videos go from 300 views to 3,000,000 almost overnight on certain occasions, and a variety of other social networks spread the word of mouth to almost anybody in the world. With such a high level of viewership, it continues to amaze me how artistic and meaningful many modern music videos still turn out to be.
